Definition & Standard

What is Gasoline (Mogas)?

TheGasoline (Motor Gasoline / Mogas) is a flammable liquid fuel derived from crude oil distillation and catalytic reforming/cracking processes. It is primarily intended for spark-ignition internal combustion engines.

On international markets, the European benchmark quality is based on standard EN 228 (Eurobob), available in various formulations depending on the season (summer/winter vapor pressure) and bioethanol blending (E5, E10).

Standard Specifications (Eurobob RON 95 / EN 228)
Research Octane Number (RON)95.0 Min. (98.0 Min. for SP98)
Motor Octane Number (MON)85.0 Min.
Density at 15°C720.0 to 775.0 kg/m³
Sulfur Content10.0 mg/kg (ppm) Max.
Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP)45 - 60 kPa (Summer) / 60 - 90 kPa (Winter)

Refining Hubs & Trading

Global gasoline trading centers around major regional oil hubs with massive storage and blending capacities:

  • ARA Hub (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp): Heart of European trading and major benchmark for Mogas Eurobob barges and cargoes (Platts/Argus quotes).
  • US Gulf Coast (Texas / Louisiana): Largest refining complex worldwide, major exporter to Latin America and the Atlantic Basin (NYMEX RBOB contracts).
  • Middle East & Singapore: Nerve centers of production and redistribution for high-growth Asian and East African markets.
  • National Refineries & Majors: Integrated refining units producing according to strict local emission standards (Euro 6, Tier 3).
Procedures & Logistics

Oil Transport, Quality Control & Indexation

Due to its high volatility and sensitivity to seasonal specifications, the gasoline supply chain requires strict technical monitoring:

Contracts & Pricing

Sales indexed to market quotes Platts Eurobob Barges, NYMEX RBOB, or Singapore Mogas 92/95.

Logistics & Transport

Shipping by product tankers (MR/LR), inland barges, pipelines, or rail tank cars to oil depots.

Inspection & Certification

Systematic control at loading and discharge by accredited bodies (SGS, Saybolt, Intertek). Sales under Incoterms FOB, CIF, or DAP.
